It seems that 20th Century Fox is attempting to pull a MCU with the release of Dark Phoenix on June 7. Sure, the studio’s X-Men franchise began in 2000 with X-Men but I wouldn’t put the subsequent eight movies on the same level as the 22 that led to Avengers: Endgame.

X-Men: The Last Stand is widely regarded as a garbage bag full of old mayonnaise that took the Jean Grey/Phoenix storyline and crapped the bed Brett Ratner-style. The 2009 Wolverine: Origins bumblef*cked the origins of several mutants, including Emma Frost and my beloved Deadpool.

In 2011, the studio started the franchise all over again with X-Men: First Class before smashing it into the original trilogy of movies in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Does everyone remember X-Men: Apocalypse from just three years ago?

Sprinkle in two more Wolverine/Logan flicks and you’ve got a timeline to rival that of you-know-what. What you don’t have is a conclusion to a satisfying and proficiently built film universe like that of the MCU.

Nonetheless, Fox would like everyone to treat Monday, May 13 as X-Men Day; a celebration of the heroic mutants and their fans from comics and film. Coincidentally (no it isn’t), Monday is the same day that Dark Phoenix tickets go on pre-sale.

This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.

Monday also promises “exclusive X-Men content, special events, and unexpected surprises” for fans that those follow the movie’s social media pages.

It’s definitely a chance for 20th Century Fox to have their control of the characters go out with a bang, but we won’t know if that’s good or bad until after Dark Phoenix hits theaters next month.
