Just How Many Blow Jobs, Rape Jokes And Drug Addictions Will It Take To Make You Forget 'Harry Potter'?

It’s been two years since the last Harry Potter film came out and six years since the last book. Six. Years. But everyone involved in the juggernaut franchise is still struggling to distance themselves from the world that made them so famous. Even JK Rowling released a book this year under a pen name in order to escape the burden of being “Harry Potter author” rather than just “author.” The book, “Cuckoo’s Calling” by “Robert Galbraith” only really found success, however, after the author’s true identity was “leaked.” Cue the backorders and the publisher reprint. And, of course, we know that Rowling (and Warner Bros.) are going back to the lucrative Potter well with an upcoming spin-off.

But while Jo Rowling can hide (for a time) behind a fake name, the three young stars of Harry Potter have those faces. Those unmistakable faces. How can we ever forget where they came from? But they’re trying their hardest. This was the cover of this weeekend’s New York Times magazine:

The article itself touches upon all the efforts Radcliffe has made to distance himself from Harry. His upcoming projects (the horror of Horns, the morphine addiction of A Young Doctor’s Notebook, the lead in a blood-soaked Martin McDonagh play) all speak to Radcliffe’s eagerness to embrace darker roles. Similarly, his ginger co-star, Rupert Grint, gave an interview to Vulture all about his brash role in the upcoming punk-centric flick CBGB and the on-stage blow jobs of his current project, “Mojo.” When Grint talks about baring his ass in CBGB, you can almost hear him sweatily hoping we’re not thinking about little Ron Weasley. But you are, you will be. How can you not?

And you’d think the fact that Emma Watson’s brief cameo in This Is The End centered around a prolonged rape joke would be enough to make you forget her fuzzy-headed Hogwarts days. (It was a funny rape joke. No, really.) But that was the whole point of the joke. They were making it in regards to Hermione.

Even Alan Rickman, who had an amazing, long and healthy career before Snape, is plagued with Harry Potter questions. He’s in that CBGB flick with Rupert Grint, looking a little less punk and a little more Sideshow Bob.

Here are his thoughts from a recent interview about Rupert, Emma and Daniel and their future in the industry:

It’s as easy or difficult as people make it for them. They’re all three of them great people and all three of them very talented actors. If people have enough common sense, they’ll let them have careers, because, why not?…I look forward to seeing Daniel’s new film about Ginsberg and I didn’t see Emma’s film, what was it called… “The Bling…?” I haven’t seen that, but no I stay in touch with them. Rupert is rehearsing a play at the moment so he’s going on stage for the first time. Daniel is ever adventurous and Emma’s gone back to finishing her degree at Brown. So they’re a great threesome.

So what do you think? Are they working? All the rape jokes and blow jobs and drug addictions? Have you forgotten yet?
