Here’s the sum total of what we learned in this week’s frustrating episode of The Walking Dead, “Now”: Maggie is pregnant (as we suspected as much after the premiere); Deanna is a wreck; her son, Spencer, is a piece of shit; the Alexandrians have no team spirit; Enid is Bella to Carl and Ron’s Jacob and Edward in Zombie Twilight; Denise and Tara are an adorable couple now; and Rick and Jessie are an inevitable one.
Oh, and one other thing: There was blood dripping down the Alexandrian wall. Did Deanna kill her son Spencer in a fit of rage?
Here’s what we didn’t learn: Whether Glenn is alive. What Daryl, Abraham, and Sasha are up to; and whether Carol and Morgan are going to turn their philosophical differences into a midnight hate fuck down in the cellar room where all the guns are held.
The way this season is set up — taking place over the course of one day, from the perspective of several different groups of people — we may not find out what happened to Glenn until the midseason finale. Before then, we still have to deal with Daryl/Abraham/Sasha, as well as the zombies breaking through the crack in the wall.
Hopefully, the next two or three episodes aren’t as frustrating and soapy as this one was.
Granted, every season is going to have an episode or three like this one, where the pace is slowed, and we all have to be reminded of what they’re fighting for. For Rick, it’s to get in Jessie’s pants. For Carl, it’s to get in Enid’s. For Maggie, it’s to see Glenn again; and for Aaron, it’s to behave recklessly and sacrifice himself over some maps he left behind when he was attacked by scores of walkers.
It’s never going to be a great life. The Alexandrian utopia is “pie in the sky.”
In the meantime, we’ll just have to abide ourselves by the Ovid quote Deanna wrote into her plans for Alexandria: “dolor hic tibi proderit olim,” which translated means, “Be patient and tough; someday this pain will be useful to you.”
That “someday” may not arrive until the November 29th midseason finale.
