Previously on The Walking Dead: Six years after Rick’s apparent death, the Hilltop and Alexandria communities continue to grow and flourish. Judith rescues a group of strangers from Walkers and brings them to Alexandria, despite Michonne’s reluctance to keep them there. Carol and Henry were ambushed by the formerly-known-as-The Saviors, only to end up getting burned alive by Carol while they’re asleep. Michonne decides to give the strangers the benefit of the doubt and escort them to the Hilltop, where they can seek shelter.

THE STORY SO FAR: Carol and Henry reunite with Daryl, who has been living alone in the wilderness with his loyal-but-unnamed dog, and who Carol is hoping will give further training and guidance to Henry so that he will no longer be alone. Michonne and Siddiq continue escorting Magna and her crew to the Hilltop, and are forced to trust them much sooner than expected when they’re ambushed by a herd of Walkers, and an exhausted and dehydrated Rosita escapes with her life from the Walkers and the Whisperers, which leaves Jesus and Daryl to go looking for Eugene, who has sought refuge in a barn somewhere.

WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT THIS EPISODE?: Luke, after Michonne accidentally destroys Luke’s Stradivarius violin with her katana, explaining to her and the others why his need to collect musical instruments matter to so much to him and why conserving art and the means for creating it is so important for rebuilding civilization. Jesus and Aaron damn near flirting with each other via their sparring matches as part of Aaron’s training. Tara (who finally makes an appearance this season) calling Jesus out over his reluctance to be leader of the Hilltop and letting him know that he needs to be the leader that they all need him to be. And Maggie is actually mentioned in this episode, as Michonne finds out just now that she no longer is at the Hilltop and Jesus mentions that she didn’t actually go back to her home planet and died on the way there, working alongside Georgie. (You know, the woman played by Jayne Atkinson who originally gave her the tips on how to rebuild her community in the first place)

WHAT’S NOT SO GOOD ABOUT THIS EPISODE?: Other than Daryl’s unnamed dog just randomly appearing with random body parts (for eating?!) out of nowhere, I got nothing.

IS NEGAN IN THIS EPISODE?: No.

MICHONNE?: She is, and despite her willingness to bring Magna and company to the Hilltop, she still doesn’t trust them and definitely doesn’t trust them enough to let them have their weapons. It isn’t until they see incoming Walkers that she informs Sawyer-from-Lost lookalike D.J. to let them have their weapons so they all don’t end up getting killed. And when she sees one approaching Walker who Magna can’t bring herself to kill because he’s Bernie, someone who she and the rest of her crew considered a friend, she puts Bernie down and then lets them know how sympathetic she is to them losing people they care about and how determined they are to continue looking after the people they care about who are still here and still alive.

CARL?: No. Still dead.

JUDITH?: No.

RICK?: No. Still gone until we get those three movies that we were all told about.

CAROL?: Once she reunites with Daryl, she confronts him over the fact that she’d like him to help train Henry in what he needs to know regarding survival and about the fact that he’s been living alone in the woods for much longer than expected.

IS DARYL STILL ALIVE? BECAUSE IF NOT, THEN WE’LL PROBABLY RIOT IF WE HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO: He is, and apparently, one of the reasons as to why he’s been living alone in the woods for so long is because there’s a part of him that still believes that Rick is still alive, due to the fact that his body was never found after the bridge exploded, and he’s still on the lookout for him. Carol (in a role-reversal from when Daryl once confronted Rick about a hope that he was once holding on to) tells him that for his own sake, he needs to let that go.

ANY SIGN OF THE WHISPERERS IN THIS EPISODE?: As we see Rosita in the woods and running for her life, we can hear The Whisperers, well, whispering, about her and about not letting her get away.

ANY SIGN OF THE BLACK HELICOPTER THAT TOOK RICK AND JADIS/ANNE AWAY?: No.

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS BEEN WATCHING LOTS OF RICK/MICHONNE SCENES ON YOUTUBE AND READING LOTS OF ‘RICHONNE’ FAN-FIC SINCE RICK’S EXIT?: (closes tabs to YouTube and to Fanfiction.net) Uhh…I haven’t the faintest idea what you’re talking about.

TO SUM IT ALL UP: Another decent episode that was charitable enough to give us some hint as to what happened to Maggie and Hershel and where they might be, while also preparing us for the eventual reveal of The Whisperers and how they’re all going to make life an absolute hell for all of our characters once they all cross paths. And we have only one episode left this year until we see how that goes.
