In a conversation with AMC President Charlie Collier at the 2015 National Association of Broadcasters Show, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman outlined a little of what to expect for The Walking Dead come season six, saying that the final scene in season five will most assuredly inform next season.

“Having Rick and Morgan together, finally, again is a huge deal, and it’s definitely going to be a big part of Season 6,” Kirkman said.

“Now it’s a very different Rick and a very different Morgan who are going to have a completely different relationship,” he added. “And it’s the questions of how they’re going to interact, how they’re going to work together — if they’re going to work together — and what comes from those interactions is going to be basically the spine of season six.”

That actually makes a terrific amount of sense. In Morgan, we have a character who is basically as bad ass as Michonne, but he also has great leadership abilities, and a different, less ruthless approach to survival. I could easily see several other members of the camp lining up behind Morgan, creating another internal power struggle within Alexandria. Unlike last season, however, Rick won’t be dealing with inexperienced pansies: Morgan is good AND formidable, and that could pose a threat to Rick.

Meanwhile, Kirkman also teased a potential major character death, saying that “a lot of cool stuff” is coming up with with Steven Yeun’s character Glenn. That may or may not involve killing him off — there was definitely an allusion to that in the back half of season five.

“We don’t kill the popular characters,” Kirkman joked.

“If I go — that could happen,” Yeun said.

Not mentioned in the conversation, however, was Negan — another big bad on par with The Governor — who may not show up for another season or two. There’s obviously plenty of time to get to him, however. Robert Kirkman noted again that the series — the most popular on all of television — could continue to run for “many, many years,” adding that he’s still writing 12 episodes of the comic book each year, which will continue to provide inspiration for the show.

Kirkman and AMC also would not provide a specific release date for The Walking Dead companion series, Fear the Walking Dead, although it is expected this summer.
