No, No, No! Not Another Zombie TV Show, AMC!

Remember when American Idol was the biggest show in the nation for a decade running? And every finale fetched 35 million viewers, and it felt like the show could run forever?

What happened?

Cannibalization, is what happened. We couldn’t be happy with just one singing competition. Television had to introduce The Voice and The Sing-Off and some Country Music Television version of American Idol and even Fox got into cannibalizing themselves with The X-Factor.

Now? A struggling American Idol will enter its final season in January, The X-Factor was cancelled, and even The Voice isn’t as big as it once was. Too many singing competitions.

Now their may be too many zombie shows. The Walking Dead is the highest rated drama on television, so AMC had to spin-off a sister show, Fear the Walking Dead. Plus, there’s The Returned, iZombie, Z Nation, In the Flesh, and probably others that I have never heard of.

The Walking Dead’s ratings are already waning slightly, and the more zombie shows there are on the air, the less unique The Walking Dead feels. SO WHY IN GOD’S NAME WOULD AMC GREENLIGHT ANOTHER ZOMBIE SHOW?

Beats me, but according to Empire of the Dead artist Arthur Suydam, his comic — written by the godfather of the zombie genre, George Romero — has been picked up by AMC and will be turned into another zombie series, because 31 episodes of zombie television on one network per year is not enough.

The series will reportedly be written by Romero and longtime partner Peter Grunwald. It will be set in New York City, and this zombie series also has vampires. The original comic series ran for 15 issues (ending two months ago), so we can only hope that Empire of the Dead is only a miniseries for AMC and that it doesn’t turn into something more annual-like.
