How Twitter Reacted to the Major Comics Departure in This Week's 'The Walking Dead'

On tonight’s episode of The Walking Dead, we finally got to see Dwight’s half burnt face. In the comics, the first time he is seen he has a burnt face. As explained in the source material, Dwight’s wife is Sherry, who later became one of the wives of Negan. However, when Negan found out that Sherry and Dwight had sex behind his back, he ironed Dwight’s face to punish him.

In the television series, Dwight runs off with his wife, Honey, to escape the Saviors in the sixth episode of the season, “Always Accountable.” In the end, however, Dwight and Honey decide to go back to the Saviors because they feared they’d be killed otherwise. In all likelihood, Negan ironed Dwight’s face for attempting to leave.

No one was bothered by that departure from the comics.

Many were, however, frustrated with the other departure from the comics. In tonight’s episode of The Walking Dead, “Twice as Far,” Denise is shot through the back of the head and through her eye by Dwight (with Daryl’s crossbow, no less). Denise, nevertheless, managed to finish her sentence before expiring.

The issue with that scene is that it was exactly how Abraham died in the comics. He was shot in the back of the head and through the eye by Dwight, and likewise, finished his sentence before expiring (similarly, Eugene was taken hostage and escaped his situation by biting Dwight’s dick). Abraham’s death was replaced by Denise’s.

Twitter reacted as you might expect when a series departs from the source material in ways that don’t necessarily benefit the series. It’s not that people were hugely upset about Denise’s death — she was well liked, but still a minor character introduced only this season — it’s that The Walking Dead once again failed to kill off a major character (although, a certain someone is suggesting that sparing Abraham’s life is simply paving the way for the mother of all character deaths). It seems like the longer a character is on the show, the better chance he or she has of surviving. The only characters who have died this season were Alexandrians, and the last time a major character died on The Walking Dead was the back-to-back deaths of Beth and Tyrese.

That’s frustrating. Viewers don’t want minor heartbreak. They want their heart torn out of their chest. Denise didn’t do the trick.

Someone did offer a great suggestion, however.
