If you watch a lot of so-called “prestige” dramas, you’re probably familiar with Ann Dowd, if only because of her knock-out role in The Leftovers. Whatever you think about the series, and whatever you think about the Guilty Remnant, you can’t deny how incredible Dowd has been in the role of Patti, the leader of GR. When the season began, my first thought was, “Huh. I guess Margo Martindale was busy,” but as Lindelof’s series progressed, I began to realize what an exceptional actress she is in her own right. She truly will deserve at least an Emmy nomination in 2015 for best supporting actress.
But then, a funny thing began to happen. I began to notice her elsewhere. For instance, she’s been recurring on Showtime’s Masters of Sex for two seasons, but I didn’t immediately connect the dots until she reprised her role a few episodes ago.
Plus, how many of you remember her from a pivotal role in True Detective.
Maybe you might also remember her from Soderbergh’s last film, Side Effects.
I think the role which caught the attention of the pay networks was probably Compliance, a little-seen but underappreciated 2012 film.
Go back a few years, and you might remember her (or at least her fairly sizable role) in an episode of Louie, “God.”
Did you watch Marley & Me? I’m sorry! But there she was:
Go back a ways, and HOLY SHIT THERE SHE WAS IN GARDEN STATE ALL ALONG.
She’s such a chameleon, in fact, that she’s played three different roles on Law & Order: SVU and four different roles on Law & Order, the original flavor.
But don’t stop. Let’s go back even further: She was on a couple of episodes of Freaks and Geeks as Kim Kelly’s (Busy Phillips) mom:
Let’s go again: A 1999 episodes of The X-Files (“Rush”).
OK. Last time, I swear! 1993. Philadelphia. Boom!
