A week after Colin Trevorrow was ousted as director of Star Wars: Episode IX because he is an asshole, the film has found a new writer and director by circling back to the writer and director of The Force Awakens, J.J. Abrams.
From StarWars.com:
“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.
Abrams will co-write the script with Chris Terio.
And it’s a fine choice, a safe choice, one that will ensure that there are no more hiccups for the foreseeable future, but it’s not a particularly interesting choice. The Force Awakens was great, but no franchise is in a better position to truly put a female or a woman of color on the map — could actually make a difference and it did with the casting in Force Awakens and it’s somewhat disappointing to see the franchise return to the same middle-aged white guy, which is officially par for the course now for the series (Abrams, Howard, Gareth Edwards, Rian Johnson).
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
