I don’t know how the hell Christopher Miller and Phil Lloyd will find the time, since they are already lined up to pen the sequel to The Lego Movie, write and potentially directed an animated Spider-Man film, and write the script for The Flash (in addition to running the second season of Last Man on Earth), but they’re now set to direct a Han Solo prequel, set for release in 2018.
At least they won’t have to write this one. Lawrence Kasdan — who co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens — and his son, Jon, have already been tapped to pen that script, and they are stoked. Lloyd and MIller are “two of the smartest, funniest and most original filmmakers around, and the ideal choice to tell the story of Han Solo, one of the coolest characters in the galaxy.”
Lloyd and Miller, of course, are best known for taking terrible movie ideas — Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, a Lego Movie — and turning them into gold. Here, they actually have a great idea to begin with.
“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”
You may begin your Han Solo casting speculation now. I’m going to put my two cents in for JGL, because he looks fantastic in a vest.
