Who is the Garfunkel In These Existing Hollywood Duos?

Key and Peele

The Most Likely Garfunkel: Jordan Peele (75 percent). It’s Keegan Michael Key who got the Emmy nomination, and who has the most post-Key and Peele gigs lined up, including his current stint on USA Network’s Playing House. On the other hand, Peele’s only major upcoming project is Keanu, which stars Keegan Michael Key and himself, but which was co-written by Peele. Still, Key’s appearance on Parks and Rec trumps Peele’s on Wet Hot American Summer.

D. B. Weiss and David Benioff

The Most Likely Garfunkel: D.B. Weiss (60 percent) — The duo have been showrunners on Game of Thrones and have at least three more seasons left in that capacity. They obviously have their hands full with the HBO fantasy drama, but once the series ends, they may want to spend some time apart. I’m sure they’ll both be able to field many offers, but it’s David Benioff who actually has some work beyond Game of Thrones to fall back on, the highlight of which is the novel and screenplay for Spike Lee’s 25th Hour. His other screenwriting credits, on the other hand (Troy, X-Men Origins: Wolverine,Stay), may actually hurt his prospects.

Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer

The Most Likely Garfunkel: Ilana Glazer (51 percent) The Broad City duo — who write and star in the Comedy Central series — have essentially worked as a team their entire short career, and I can’t imagine them ever working apart. So, I have nothing to base this except that Abbi Jacobson is the slightly better lip-sync performer based on their respective promos for this Thursday night’s Lip Sync Battle.

Melissa McCarthy and Paul Feig

The Most Likely Garfunkel: Melissa McCarthy (57 percent) — Though not an official comedy duo, the McCarthy and Feig team have had huge success together, starting with Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy and the upcoming Ghostbusters. In fact, Feig hasn’t directed a movie without McCarthy since Bridesmaids, while McCarthy’s non-Feig movies (Tammy, Identity Thief) haven’t been as well received. I’ll give the Garfunkel nod to McCarthy here, ever so slightly, if only because when she’s not working in a Feig film, she’s working with lesser directors, like Shawn Levy or her husband, Ben Falcone (who is not bad, but he’s no Paul Feig).

Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair

Jessica-St-Clair-and-Lennon-Parham-of-Playing-House_gallery_primary.jpg

The Most Likely Garfunkel: Lennon Parham (52 percent) — Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair have been best friends for years. They star and co-write Playing House, and before that they starred in and co-wrote Best Friends Forever (both shows are virtually identical, and they’re both enjoyable). They got married within a week of each other and had their first child in the same year. They’ve both been on Veep, but I have to give the slight Paul Simon nod to Jessica St. Clair, who was so good last season on Review.

Christopher Miller and Phil Lord

The Most Likely Garfunkel: Christopher Miller (100 percent) — The directing/writing and producing duo have been friends and co-workers since their college days at Dartmouth, and they’ve worked on virtually everything together, including Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Last Man on Earth, 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie. However, Phil Lord has three more producing credits than Miller — two short films and a TV movie. Therefore, he clearly has the bigger work ethic. This one’s not even a contest.

Jennifer Lawrence and David O’ Russell

The Most Likely Garfunkel: David O’ Russell (80 percent) — Jennifer Lawrence was around before David O’ Russell, and David O’ Russell was around a long time before Jennifer Lawrence came along, but the two together are basically Oscar bait (see Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle and the upcoming Joy). On the other hand, when they’re apart, Jennifer Lawrence has two franchises, a Spielberg film, a Linklater film, and a movie co-starring with Chris Pratt (in which she’s paid significantly more than him) coming up. Meanwhile, O’Russell has a history of abusive behavior on his film sets, an arrest for being creepy, and before Lawrence came along, he was working on a film (Nailed) that he couldn’t even finish because financing fell through.
