Rumors swirled this weekend that Emma Watson, queen of our hearts, could be dating Prince Harry. She swiftly shot down those rumors, but some of us (me, hi, I’m talking about me) choose to believe in a world with the possibility of an out and proud feminist princess.

Whatever, Em. OK. I believe you. A-WINK. I am winking because I don’t want to believe you and winks are the sign of that. I can keep explaining if you’d like.

But all this talk of When Harry Met Emma reminded me of the greatest love that never was—Prince William and what could have been the greatest queen of our or any time, Britney Spears.

In 1999ish, Prince William saw a pretty girl on the telly and probably got out his mobile and gave her a ring and nipped out and popped into a shop and picked her up some crisps or something, whatever princes do to impress pop stars. Yes I’m easily impressed by snack items. Rumors of his attempted courtship went on for years. The biggest rumor was that he was emailing her heart, but she told News of the World that he HAD NOT emailed her heart.

“I really don’t know where these stories come from,” the 18-year-old told the tabloid.

“There were rumours that I e-mailed him, which isn’t true,” she said. I’ve never met him or contacted him. I wouldn’t mind meeting him, but who wouldn’t.”

But then in 2002, she was on Frank Skinner and told him that he DID email her heart.

Sadly, the love connection went unmade. But we can dream of what could have been, a better world with Princess Brit Brit, and instead of Pippa, Jamie Lynn Spears shanking people at pita shops. Sigh.
