People, Let Me Tell You About My Best Friend: Television's Greatest Pals

You know what television is missing right now? A couple of good buddies like Sawyer and Hurley. Friends whose relationships remind us of our own best friends, current or past. The kind of pals who hang out together so much that they’re as close as any siblings; they play together, sometimes work or live together, fight and then hug it out. The friends who argue over the stupidest things and stop speaking to each other, then forget what they were fighting over when one really needs the other. Where have all the good buddies gone?

The last couple of really good friendships I can remember were on “Lost” and “Seinfeld.” On “Parenthood” and “Brothers and Sisters,” the siblings hang out and are good to each other, but they can’t really be counted, because they’re siblings. So in memory of the seemingly lost art of great fictional camaraderie, I present to you, Television’s Top Five Greatest Pals. Argue them over amongst yourselves:

5. Chandler and Joey: The accidental roommates who became as close (and argumentative) as any married couple.

4. Laverne and Shirley: How many girls do you know who could work and live together and still remain the best of friends?

3. Gilligan and the Skipper: The dumb and dumber, little screen duo that could.

2. Ralph and Ed: I consider these two and #1 to be equals, they are just the male and female version of each other. Neighbors, partners in big schemes and dreams, traders of insults and not-so-dim insights; best friends until the end.

1. Lucy and Ethel: In a slight shift on Ed Norton, Ethel is outwardly smart neighbor and best friend who always attempts to talk Lucy out of her crazy plans…and always ends up helping her anyway.
