Not Just Another Drop in the Ocean: Five Things You May Not Have Heard About This Week

I find the Important Stuff so you don’t have to.

5. (Undercover) Batman Used His Powers For Good.

Christian Bale flew a young boy with leukemia to Disneyland. Four year old Jayden Barber, whose biggest wish was to meet Batman, went to lunch with Bale and talked superheroes.

4. Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master Won, Then Lost (on a Technicality) The Golden Lion Award. Joaquin and Philip Shared the Best Actor Award.

The Venice Film Festival jury was prepared to hand out its top three awards, The Golden and Silver Lions (for Best Film and Best Director), along with the acting award, but a (apparently not well known) rule forced the jury to yank back one of the awards. After being told no film could win more than one award (the exception being for actors), the jury headed by Michael Mann decided to take back the Golden Lion and award it to Korea’s Pietà. Anderson graciously responded to the decision, “I’m thrilled with whatever they want to hand over. I heard the scuttlebutt recently, but I’m thrilled with whatever we got.”

3. We Got More Details on the Ryan Gosling/Christina Hendricks Joint Venture, How to Catch a Monster.

After writing a script with his Drive co-star in mind, Gosling sent it to Hendricks in a “…cool box with an interesting little key, and cool artwork in it.” The actress read and loved the script about a single mother trying to support her two children by working at a Fetish club. (That *earthquake* you just felt was the thud of a kazillionty Hendricks fans’ jaws hitting the floor as they imagined the actress decked out in head to toe black latex.) The story also includes boys “off on their own adventures…discovering an underground city,” but you don’t really care about that, do you?

2. The Rumor Mill Went into Overdrive: Could Viggo Mortensen Be Up for Doctor Strange in Thor: The Dark World?

I’m not sure how excited people should get over this one, but it is an interesting rumor. Word on the street is that Doctor Strange is set to be making an appearance in the next Thor film. On the other side of internet-town, Viggo is said to be in negotiations with Marvel for an “unspecified role.” If Hemsworth and Mortensen are in a film together, my ladyloins may self destruct. We’ll have to keep an eye on this business…

Meanwhile, filming has begun and props are arriving to the Surrey, England set of Thor: The Dark World:

1. The First Clip from Neil Jordan’s Byzantium Revealed Saoirse Ronan’s Bloodlust.

For such a short snippet it does a fine job of communicating Eleanor’s (Ronan) insatiable desire; reminds me ever so slightly of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Byzantium features Ronan and Gemma Arterton as mother/daughter vampires who are hiding out in a coastal town. One interesting detail that sets these vampires apart is that instead of fangs, these ladies employ a talon to pierce their victims. Byzantium also stars Jonny Lee Miller, Sam Riley, Tom Hollander and Warren Brown and premieres at the Toronto Film Festival today.

Cindy Davis can cut the mustard.
