Five things you may have missed this week…

6. Matthew Perry Set Up the Perfect Chandler and Joey Reunion Show.

Our old Friend signed on with CBS (really?) to do The Odd Couple remake. Based on Neil Simon’s play—which also spawned several stage revivals, a couple of films and series, and a female version—the familiar story revolves around two ill-suited roommates, one a fastidious neatnik and the other, a boorish slob. Perry will take on the uncharacteristic Oscar Madison role, as well as write and executive produce. The only question left is, when will Matt LeBlanc show up?

5. Kurt Sutter Lined Up His Next FX Project.

After what Sutter has accomplished with Sons of Anarchy this season, wherever he leads, we shall follow. Though there’s been talk of a Sons prequel set in the 60s, that won’t be his next project. Instead, Kurt-of-all-trades (creator, writer, actor, producer, director) ran with an idea from Imagine’s Brian Grazer (Arrested Development, Parenthood, Friday Night Lights, Lie to Me, 24); the two will pair up for The Bastard Executioner, a period piece about a knight serving under King Edward III. “…broken by the ravages of war [he] vows to lay down his sword. But when that violence finds him again he is forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all.” Sutter loves his violence and gore, and though sometimes I have to peek through my hands, his storytelling is worth any uncomfortable squirming. I’ll be very interesting to see who is cast as this conflicted swordsman.

4. The Terminator Rebooters Cast Sarah Connor.

Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke beat out Brie Larson and Margot Robbie for the coveted role in Alan Taylor’s upcoming remake, tentatively titled Terminator: Genesis. Rumor has it the story will—at least in part—be set in the 1940s to 50s, and revolve around Sarah Connor’s parents, and that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator was based on a human character who interacts with a young Sarah. As Joanna noted, since Jason Clarke (The Great Gatsby, Zero Dark Thirty)—who’s up for John Connor—is nearly twenty years older than Emilia, we’ll surely be taking a little timey-wimey ride. Oh Mister Taylor, you do know how to draw us in, don’t you? I’m practically picking out my theater seat already. (Lest we forget, there’s a companion series in the works as well.)

3. Simon Pegg Faced His Fears.

What? Another Simon Pegg trailer? Having made a staggering thirteen films since 2010, I do believe he’s trying to take over the world…and damned if we aren’t all delighted. This time ‘round, Pegg stars as an author with A Fantastic Fear of Everything. Based on Bruce Robinson’s (Withnail and I) Paranoia in the Launderette, Pegg plays failed children’s book author Jack, who decides to take a stab at being a crime novelist—but his multiple phobias and terrifying nightmares threaten to derail both his new book, and his life. The film premiered in the UK last year, but those movie people know we statesiders just love waiting for foreign films at least an extra year. A Fantastic Fear of Everything also stars Alan Drake, Amara Karan, Clare Higgins, and Paul Freeman; it’s out on iTunes January 7th, and in theaters February 7, 2014.

2. We Got Our First Look at Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy in Child 44.

Chilean/Swedish director Daniel Espinosa’s (Safe House) Child 44 is based on the Tom Rob Smith crime thriller about an MGB agent who investigates a string of murdered children and hunts down a serial killer. The story is based on real life killer Andrei Chikatilo, aka the Rostov Ripper. The film boasts an impressive cast, including Noomi Rapace, Vincent Cassel, Jason Clarke, Joel Kinnaman, Dev Patel, Paddy Considine, and reunites Gary Oldman and Tom Hardy. Set in Stalinist Russia, Hardy plays war hero Leo Demidov, assigned to investigate a child’s suspicious death during a time and place when “officially,” murder doesn’t exist. In addition to possibly making himself a government target, Demidov becomes suspicious that his wife (Rapace) may be having an affair. Costumes, danger, political intrigue, fine actors and hot men? I’m practicing my salutes…

1. Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar Teaser Sneaked Us a Peek at Where We’ve Been, and Hinted at Where We’re Going.

It’s Nolan, so we know we’re not getting a lot of information—but we’ll take anything. What we do know is the film is about space explorers who discover and travel through a wormhole. Just that sentence is enough to make me pee a little. Interstellar was written by Jonathan Nolan, stars Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, John Lithgow, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, Ellen Burstyn, Wes Bentley, Bill Irwin, Mackenzie Foy, Topher Grace and David Gyasi, and as the trailer notes, we have to wait a whole year to see it.
