Sure, Fiona may screw up. A LOT. But she’s been more of a mother than pretty much any other actual, biological mother on this show for almost as long as she’s been alive.
Was Emily the perfect mother? Of course not. She’s judgy and overbearing and was definitely not blameless in her pregnant teenage daughter’s choice to run away from home. But she loves her family, and if you mess with any one of her girls, she will fuck you up.
Lorraine Baines McFly
Yes, it’s totally weird that she tries to bang her son, but THAT’S NOT HER FAULT. Let’s not blame the woman for her time-traveling son’s choices, okay?
Okay, everything here really is her fault. It must be hard trying to be a good mom when you’re a sex-shaming, incestu-ish lunatic, but at least no one could ever say she doesn’t love her kid. If she thinks murdering someone will help her son, THEN THAT PERSON GETS MURDERED.
STRONG SHAKESPEARE FEELINGS AHEAD: Juliet’s mother is undeniably terrible. She’s neglectful and selfish and in the Baz Luhrmann version is BLATANTLY trying to get into her daughter’s suitor’s pants. But you know what no one ever talks about? Juliet is NOT QUITE THIRTEEN. And Lady Capulet was younger than Juliet is now when she had Juliet. So this woman is like MAYBE 24, tops. Probably younger. With an emotional preteen daughter. So even if she’s doing a terrible job, it was probably her very best.
Hannah’s mother on Girls is definitely not the best. She alternates between enabling her daughter’s privileged narcissism and ignoring her. But to be fair, I don’t know how anyone could really do any better with Hannah Horvath as their daughter. Plus her husband of multiple decades turned out to be gay, so let’s cut her a break.
Eleanor Iselin (The Manchurian Candidate)
Look, being a mother is an important job. But world domination? That’s also important, so maybe let’s all stop judging each other’s choices so much.
Cersei is a demon of a woman, and whether due to terrible genes or an actual curse, her children haven’t fared so well for the most part. But family is literally the only thing this woman has ever cared about, which I guess is way better than nothing. Maybe kinda?
