6 Suggestions for Cary Fukunaga's Impossible Task of Topping Tim Curry's Pennywise

Let’s get real. Cary Fukunaga (True Detective) must love a challenge; he’s taken on the impossible task of trying to top the 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s It, starring Tim Curry as Pennywise. Speaking with El Globo, the director discussed the project and a need to find just the right actor:

“I’ve been in this project for about five years. I had already read versions of the script but nothing felt right. Everybody tried to put too much into it, telling it from the perspective of the adult and the child in a two-hour movie. It didn’t fit. So I decided to throw it all away and start from scratch. This will be my first movie in the U.S. and I’m still trying to find the perfect guy to play Pennywise. It’s really good to know Stephen King likes what we did. We changed names, dates and dynamics, but the spirit is similar to what he’d like to see in cinemas, I think.”

No matter what other actors he gets, that effing clown is the key to the whole production — a great scary clown (*shudder*) terrifies forever; a subpar stand-in will tank the whole thing (just ask Ryan Murphy about what happened after Twisty left town). Knowing, as we do, that absolutely no one could possibly top Curry, it’s best for Fukunaga to just go his own way. That said, those of you who’ve been around a while know I can’t resist a chance for dream-casting. Here are five suggestions that have a shot at setting your teeth on edge.
