5 Upcoming Psychotically Charged Films You'd Be Crazy Not to See

October is coming, and that means it’s not just time for pumpkin flavored, orange colored crap; it’s time for a good mindfuck. The best scary films aren’t about the blood or the stabbings, they’re psychological, moody, suspense-building creepfests that terrorize us from the inside-out. So, if you’re ready for a good cuddle on the couch, check out these delightfully twisty films headed our way.

The Green Room, October 14th (UK), TBA 2015 (US)

Directed by Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin); starring Patrick Stewart, Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat, Callum Turner, Macon Blair and Mark Webber. Of the script Patrick Stewart said, “It scared the shit out of me,” and he had to stop halfway through to turn on the lights, lock up the house, and grab a stiff one… Picard is transformed into Darcy, a vicious leader of a Neo-Nazi white supremacist group, intending to eliminate the members of a punk rock band who just witnessed the gang commit a violent murder. What more do you need to know (see the cast)?

Too Late, TBA 2015

Directed by Dennis Hauck; starring John Hawkes, Dichen Lachman, Joanna Cassidy, Crystal Reed, Robert Forster, Jeff Fahey, Natalie Zea, Dash Mihok, Sydney Tamiia Poitier and Rider Strong. Never mind the fact that I’d watch John Hawkes watching paint dry, the actor plays a private investigator trying to find a missing stripper, in what’s being billed as a twisted, emotional neo noir — filmed entirely on 35mm, with each of its scenes (basically, 5 acts) a single long shot.

Bone Tomahawk, October 23rd

BT1.jpg

Directed by S. Craig Zahler; starring Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins, David Arquette, Sean Young, Matthew Fox, Lili Simmons and Sid Haig. This “horror/western” gets Russell back in the saddle as a sheriff leading three cowboys (Jenkins, Fox, Wilson) a mission to rescue a group of captives from cave-dwelling cannibals. Yes, please!

The Witch, February 27, 2016

Directed by Robert Eggers; starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie and Julian Richings. A “horrific historical” period film about a family banished to the outskirts of their Christian village are left alone to face an unknown force…and disappearing children. Which is more scary: a witch, or Puritan people possessed by their ideas of one?

The Invitation, March 2016

Directed by Karyn Kusama (Girlfight, Jennifer’s Body), starring Logan Marshall-Green, Michiel Huisman, Tammy Blanchard, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Lindsay Burdge, Jay Larson, Michelle Krusiec, Karl Yune, Jordi Vilasuso, Mike Doyle, Toby Huss and John Carroll Lynch. A slow-burn psychological thriller..aka my favorite kind of movie. Invited to a dinner party at his former home, a man (Marshall-Green) thinks his ex-wife and her new husband might have something very bad planned (hint: he’s not wrong).

Cindy Davis, (Twitter) will peek through her fingers watching all of these.
