Winona Ryder is, quite simply, a goddess. Known for her unconventional beauty, she starred in Tim Burton films before their current, over-Depped incarnation. After a few decades, Winona’s certainly experienced her ups and downs, career wise, but she’s back in fighting form with The Iceman, which recently premiered and the Venice and TIFF film festivals. Is she back for good this time? God, I hope so. Here are eleven reasons to love Winona Ryder.

Winona arrives in Hollywood as a total dork: “In the scripts for my first four movies, my character was always described as ‘homely’ or ‘freakish.’ I was actually really into that because I loved Ruth Gordon and I wanted to be like a cool character actress.” - Interview Magazine

Winona inspired the term “Wino Forever”: Johnny Depp just couldn’t bear to completely erase that tattoo or her memory from his life. Can you blame him?

Winona knew Mel Gibson was nuts before you did: “I remember, like, fifteen years ago, I was at one of those big Hollywood parties. And he was really drunk. I was with my friend, who’s gay. He made a really horrible gay joke. And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about ‘oven dodgers,’ but I didn’t get it. I’d never heard that before. It was just this weird, weird moment. I was like, ‘He’s anti-Semitic and he’s homophobic.’ No one believed me!” — GQ

Sean Penn still owes Winona $500: “When I was about 18, Sean Penn made a bet with me. He had just directed his first movie, and he’s like, ‘By the time you’re 30, I will bet you $500 that you’ll be sick of acting.’ I’m still waiting to collect, because I’m not.” — Elle

Darren Aronofsky couldn’t stop rolling the camera on Winona in Black Swan: “There’s one scene with her, where I think I did 20 or 30 takes, which is a lot. But the reason I did so many is because I couldn’t believe that was all [the time] I was going to get with Winona Ryder. I really just wanted to keep working with her.” — Elle

Winona wanted Angelina Jolie to have the showy Girl, Interrupted part: “I never had any bad feelings about Angelina. And I was hurt that people thought that. Everyone assumed I was really jealous because I thought this would be my vehicle. We said from the very beginning that the actress who played Lisa would probably win an Oscar, because it was the big, great, showy part. But I always related to Susanna.” — Blackbook

Winona gushes over Tim Burton like other starlets do about Woody Allen: “I just love spending time with him, so it never feels like work. He’s someone I’d honestly do anything for. I’d read the phone book for him. He’s so special. And I think he also opened the door for so many other people.” — Fandango

Yet Winona still realizes Beetlejuice 2 is a bad idea: “[H]er response was a heavy sigh, a roll of the eyes, and a ‘Yeah, that would be…great.’” — Flixist

Winona was Veronica bloody Sawyer in Heathers: “We were joking about taglines on the set, and we came up with one that was, ‘Love. Lust. Murder. Heathers: The Last Teen Film.’ We really wanted to make the teen film to end all teen films.” — Interview Magaine]

Winona probably doesn’t Google herself: “I don’t use the Internet, but apparently you can find out everything on it. I have my e-mail on my BlackBerry, and that’s about it. I’ve never read a blog, ever. I feel like it’s taking away that great anticipation of seeing a movie. It used to be you’d hear, like, Al Pacino was making a movie, and you wouldn’t know anything about it.” — Elle

Winona embraces the aging process: “I’m now 40 and I’m actually psyched for 40 and psyched to get older because I think you get more comfortable with yourself, and it’s more interesting, and the roles — the size doesn’t really matter. Usually those kinds of roles are more interesting.” — Us Weekly

Winona’s paid her dues: After that pesky 2001 shoplifting arrest, Winona was largely ostracized from Hollywood and fought her way back after several years. These days, Lindsay Lohan still gets hired after multiple DUIs, several jail and rehab stints, and being a drugged up mess who can’t show up on set. Where’s the justice in that?
