How Many 'Prometheus' Sequels Does Ridley Scott Have Planned, and When Will We See the 'Alien' Connection?

Things are getting strange in the Alien universe. A while back, we reported Ridley Scott was apparently behind the delay of Neill Blomkamp’s hotly anticipated entry in the franchise. I’m starting to worry Scott’s not up for any perceived competition. After all, Blomkamp’s ideas and artwork are on the money, and he’s got Sigourney Weaver onboard for Ripley’s return. Blomkamp has also said he had to make a slight script edit, because Scott felt something was “bumping” into Prometheus 2’s territory.

In a new interview with German movie site Filmfutter, the Prometheus director revealed he has more than two Alien-related films in the works, and that even though we won’t see any Xenomorphs in P2, the creatures will return further down the franchise line.

(My Deutsch [Gehen sie links und dann geradeaus!] is über-rusty, so…via Google translate — and you know how that goes)

“The whole point is to explain the Alien franchise and how and why the creation of the aliens. I always saw the Alien as a type of biological warfare. For me, the original spaceship that I call the croissant, a warship that contains these biomechanoids creatures, which is all about destruction.”

*insert record screeching sound here*

Wait, he called the Alien ship, “croissant”???!!! I mean, I can kinda see it,

but I’d probably have gone with a piece of plumbing, or maybe a toilet seat. Croissant sounds more like something you call your mistress.

Anyhoo, once again I’ve drifted from the relevant portion of the interview. After speaking about linking the Alien and Prometheus franchises — yes, franchises — Scott explained that really won’t happen until after Prometheus 2:

(Translation also via The Guardian, as Google didn’t make complete sense)

“It won’t be in the next one,” said the British film-maker. “It will be in the one after this one or maybe even a later [fourth] film before we get back into the Alien franchise.”

(original text: Ja, aber es wird nicht der nächste sein. Es wird in dem übernächsten Prometheus sein oder vielleicht sogar in einem danach, bevor wir gewissermaßen zurück im Alien-Franchise sind.)

Prometheus 3 or 4? Is that really a good idea? Listen, I love the Alien world — the first film is one of my favorites — and despite all my mocking, there’s no way I won’t be sitting in a theater seat for Prometheus 2. But, I have to admit I was really looking forward to Blomkamp’s take on what comes next, and if Ridley Scott is going to spend the rest of his days preempting the competition, I think a lot of fans are going to be disappointed. I’m all for the director’s interest in exploring his ideas about the beginnings of mankind and how that relates to the Alien world, I just hope it won’t continue to interfere with another visionary director’s own explorations. Of course, it’s possible Scott and Blomkamp have some kind of brilliant, future intersection planned, and if that’s the case, it’s all good.

Meanwhile, Prometheus 2 ***Mild Prometheus Spoiler follows****

begins production next February, with a script by Michael Green (American Gods, Blade Runner Sequel, Green Lantern), and Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender — well, at the very least, Fassie’s head —

reprising their roles. Picking right up where Prometheus left off, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw is off to find her makers, despite their apparent disgust at running into her. The film’s due out sometime in 2017; sequels TBA.
