We may be all-consumed with Star Wars for a good while, but in the back of our collective mind lingers another rollickingly fun film whose sequel will hit the box office the same month as Episode VIII. Holy what a great 2017 summer kick-off that will be! As we ponder over who Star Wars Spoiler, swipe to read: Rey’s father is — and whether she met him at The Force Awakens’ end — End Spoiler in another part of the galaxy, a certain swaggering space hero is about to run into his own Star-Dad (who coincidentally almost played Han Solo or Luke Skywalker). And oh, what a positively perfect father he may be.
At first it was just a delicious rogue rumor flitting around the interwebs, but the man himself has now confirmed discussions are taking place, even if he seems delightfully unaware of how perfect his casting would be.
“[The Guardians rumor] is one of those things that’s really funny. The way the world works today is very different from back in the day when nobody knew about anything. I literally got a phone call two days ago about this. You got to understand something, I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy. I don’t know anything about it. I’m one of the four idiots who have never seen it, evidently.I tell you what: Many, many times I’ve heard, “That’s a really fun movie. Really good movie. Great characters.” But I don’t know it. I didn’t realize [Gunn] had written and directed it. So we talked to each other on the phone and I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read it and I have to watch the movie, because I can’t bring anything for you. I got nothing to offer here.’ I’m amazed to get asked about this, because everybody knows more about it than I do.” (Kurt Russell)
Get your “Do It” vibes going now, people, because it just doesn’t get any better than this. Part Plissken and a dash of Jack Burton; throw in a little Wyatt Earp, and Peter Quill’s jaw will drop when he finally meets dear old dad.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Dave Bautista, Benicio Del Toro, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, and Pom Klementieff (as Mantis).
