Maisie Williams on Crossing Geeky Fandoms and Meeting Idols

Game of Thrones adorable, yet deadly Arya Stark aka Maisie Williams is excited to be making her Doctor Who debut in this weekend’s “The Girl Who Died” (let’s just hope she’s not…), and the following week’s “The Woman Who Lived.” Like her friend and peer, Sophie Turner, Williams thinks the hype of “crossing geeky fandoms” is exciting, and she’s hopeful her performance will please fans of both series.

It’s unclear whether the would-be-Faceless Williams plays the same character in both episodes, the first of which involves aliens warring on a Viking village. Good thing Syrio left a girl well prepared for battle. Here’s a sneak peek of “The Girl Who Died,” which looks like it may have recruited a few Game of Thrones’ extras. Williams says she’s not sure which series has the most beards, but she found it “very nice to have that familiar bearded, hairy men setting,” as well as a futuristic element.”

Though Williams had previously only watched a couple of the Tennant years, she loved working with Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth doctor:

“Peter has been such a joy to work with. My brother was so excited when he heard I got the part, as was I. He’s a wonderful, wonderful actor and I couldn’t wait to meet him. He totally lived up to my expectations and I Iove that! When you meet your idols - people say ‘don’t meet your idols as they never turn out to be who you want them to be.’ That was completely not the case with Peter and he’s been wonderful and really helpful on set.”

Williams’ two-parter is written by Jamie Mathieson (Being Human) and Steven Moffat, and directed by Edward Bazalgette (Poldark) who like Peter Capaldi, has an 80s music background — he directed The Vapors’ Turning Japanese video; it airs on BBCA, Saturday at 9 pm EST.
