2016 was a huge year for Disney. If there was any doubt about the success of taking their animated favorites and turning them into live action features, Jungle Book rightly dispelled those apprehensions by knocking the box office’s dick in the dirt with an estimated $966.5 million, making it one of the top 5 highest grossing movies of last year. In total, Disney movies brought in an estimated $6.5 BILLION world wide.
Disney has found a reliable cash cow in live action films. With Beauty and the Beast coming out on March 17th, it stands to reason that Disney will be on track to having another record breaking year. Matter of fact, there’s a whole list of favorites slated to get remade. Which brings us to another live action film in the works: Dumbo.
As is stands, Tim Burton will be directing this version of the Disney classic.
I know, I know, but there’s a bit of light at the end of the tunnel: Tom Hanks and Will Smith are in negotiations to appear in the film.
If the negotiations close, Hanks will be playing a villain in the movie and Smith will play the father of the children who develop a bond with the eponymous character.
Given Disney’s record with live action films, I’m excited. Overall, Maleficent, Cinderella, Jungle Book and forgive me, Alice in Wonderland have been beautifully shot. However, my excitement is quelled knowing that it’s a Tim Burton film. His works hasn’t captured me in the last 10+ years and we all know that Alice in Wonderland was only just ok. On the plus side, Johnny Depp is not attached.
Yet. Not sure how a pile of scarves will fit into the narrative.
I’ll update as more is known but fingers crossed that Burton doesn’t Burton the shit out of this.
