Isn’t ‘traditional masculinity’ neat? This embedded set of cultural norms that dictate how a Man is supposed to be and to act. Don’t you just love how that framework of ‘values’ and ‘standards’ reduces the annoying complexity of a multifaceted individual within a changing society to a nice, manageable set of easily understandable commandments like STRONG, PROVIDE, and WIN.
Yeah, it’s goooooood stuff. I love the smell of reductive gender norms in the morning. Smells like… Jordan Peterson’s bathroom after a few months of his hyper masculine all-meat diet?
Over on Reddit there was a fun thread the other day that addressed the WIN commandment of ‘traditional masculinity’. And by ‘fun’ I mean ‘an odd mixture of hilarious and terrifying yet anthropologically fascinating’? The question went: ‘Men of Reddit, what’s the most pathetic or ridiculous thing another man has done to assert his dominance over you?’ You can check out the full thread here, but below are some highlights (for extra effect, imagine each of the would-be alpha males in these stories as Jordan Peterson. It’s a hoot):
