There was a period of time in the late 20th century where it felt like technological innovation and competition between manufacturers led to a lot of relatively consumer friendly and useful products and services being developed and offered. It existed on the back of a planet-killing and majority world-destroying production line, of course, but since then, things have only gotten worse. Capitalism’s tendency towards monopoly and its endless, sociopathic quest for profit meant that things were always going to end up this way, where even those products and services that might have once been useful have either all been smothered or rendered useless. Reddit had this depressing topic on its mind the other day when it asked the question: ‘What terrible product are you forced to use because there isn’t anything better?’ You can check out the full thread here but below are some highlights:
