Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was my biggest film surprise in a long time. I really wasn’t expecting anything of quality at all, but when some people kept on going on about how much fun it was—and how unexpectedly well put together—I eventually relented and went to see it. And, to my shock, it really was great. It was a blast. A hoot. A real whale of a time. Not just for the big things like the main characters and the set pieces (and Regé-Jean Page being genuinely hilarious), but for the attention to detail and the smaller gag stuffed throughout.
Case in point, my absolutely favourite part of the whole film. It’s later on in the story, and our heroes are trying to sneak back into Neverwinter. Simon uses a spell to cast an illusion of Edgin to distract some castle guards. Unfortunately, his foot gets stuck, and the illusion stutters and melts down just as the guards are most enthralled by it. It’s at this point that a one scene character steals the entire movie, as one of the palace guards (played by Justice Ritchie) is so horrified by the sight of a man seemingly melting in front of him while caught in an infinite loop that he delivers the line, ‘What madness is this?!’ with total perfection. Observe, how his face transforms during, and then that delivery:
@stevec244 POV: When your magic distraction goes hilariously wrong "What madness is this!?" LMAO #FYP #Hilarious #Funny #Magic #DungeonandDragons ♬ original sound - Steve
Glorious. Simply glorious.
Reddit had this topic on its mind the other day, when it pondered the question of which minor characters steal a movie with one line (occasionally relaxing the criteria here and there to include some gems). You can check out the full thread here, but below are some highlights:
