Reddit Asks the Question: 'What's the Best One-Hit Wonder Of the Nineties?'

Well it’s a day ending in ‘y’ so it must be a Nineties nostalgia day on The Internet! Today, the fond, fuzzy feelings are directed at the era’s one-hit wonders. As always, we must be on guard against the insidiously effective forces of nostalgia, never allowing it to fool us into blindly worshiping the past, but it’s difficult to deny that there was something special about the music scene in the Nineties—specifically the broad swathe of genres that saw mainstream success.

Sometimes it feels—though, again, this may be subject to some degree of nostalgia warp—as if the big hits of the Nineties came from a more eclectic background than any other decade. That it was a time when the one-hit wonders and the broad appeal songs came equally from the lands of rock, hip-hop, dance, and more. Reddit pondered this subject the other day, when it asked the question: ‘What’s your favourite one-hit wonder of the Nineties?’ You can check out the full thread here, but below are some highlights (I’ve put The Cardigans in the header pic because I love them and because I always see them listed in these kind of roundups and I flatly refuse to classify them as such, even if in some geographical markets they may have met the strictest definitions of the term):
