I really hate mushrooms. I hate the texture, the flavour, the consistency, the smell. They come in a huge variety of type and preparation, but I’ve yet to try a version that’s been anything less than borderline sickening. Maybe I could learn to like them with some consistent conditioning—you can learn to like most things—but it would be a struggle. On top of all that, I hate how much of a strangehold mushrooms have had on the world of meat free alternatives up until only really recently. Now that synthetic meat and other solutions are becoming affordable to produce it’s a different picture, but prior to that if you wanted to get a veggie meal in a lot of places, the mushroom would be front and centre of the options—sometimes it was the only option. Thankfully we seem to be reaching a more englightened era now.
Having said all that, I’m aware I’m in the minority. Most people I know love mushrooms. Or at the very least enjoy them or tolerate them just fine. Reddit pondered this idea the other day when it asked the question: ‘What’s one food everyone seems to love but you find repulsive?’ You check check out the full thread here, but below are some highlights.
