So much potential. So much wastage. Dive into a pit of awful, awful decisions as Reddit asks the question: ‘What’s an Example of a Good Character Ruined by Terrible Casting?’ You can check out the full thread here but below are some highlights:
In The Conqueror, John Wayne played Genghis Khan. Just imagine how that would work out. It went exactly like how you imagine it.
George Clooney as Batman but at least he admitted he was awful.
the character of evie in the third The Mummy film. movie wasn’t that good, but replacing Rachel weizs character just didn’t work
Dr.Doom, twice now. To be fair, it may also have been bad writing, but whatever it was, they ruined one of the best characters in Marvel Comics
Eddie Brock being played by Topher Grace
Every single person in The Last Airbender.
Lex Luther played by Jesse Eisenberg
There is no timeline in which Kyle Reese should look anything like Jai Courtney.
Everyone in those Percy Jackson films. Aging up all the characters was pointless and stupid, and pretty much ruined any chance of them being good films
The Netflix Death Note Movie. Why Nat Wolf for Light? Why?
Sofia Coppola as Mary Corleone in The Godfather 3 - better that she later focused on her directing, because her awful performance in 3 ruined the role and the film.
Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York.
Mystique from Xmen- Jennifer Lawrence.
I don’t actually think it’s a terrible portrayal, but due to Jlaw’s fame, Mystique got significantly more screen time. They rewrote the story for the actor which resulted in worse films.
I hated Finn Jones as Iron Fist. The writers didn’t do a great job at making him likeable anyway but it certainly didn’t help to have a guy who only has two modes: shouting “I AM THE IMMORTAL IRON FIST” and dramatic whispering.
Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Too clean cut, too smug, and about a foot undertall
Late Bosworth as Lois Lane. Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
Seriously, there hasn’t been a decent Lois Lane since Erica Durance, who nailed it in Smallville. I’m still irked that the movies went a different way when they already had the perfect fucking cast.
Gambit in Wolverine Origin. Terrible.
Albus Dumbledore. Richard Harris was perfect, but Michael Gambon was aggressive and detached, completely lacked the gentle empathy that made Dumbledore the best.
Almost everybody in Suicide Squad.
I’m probably in the minority here, but I did not like Andrew Garfield at all as Peter Parker. He was too cool and good looking to be the nerdy Peter from the comics. He was a good Spider-Man though.
Jared Leto as The Joker.
On one hand you have Jack Nicholson’s Joker, a mob boss turned comic villain. Interesting portrayal, became iconic. Diabolical, unhinged, but not without tact.
On the other you have Heath Ledger’s Joker. Twisted, psychotic, unpredictable and chaotic evil.
And then along comes the lead singer of 30 Seconds to Mars, like some kind of glam rock Joker, just sorta making people uncomfortable. He wasn’t psychotic, he wasn’t diabolical, he was barely chaotic. He was just a jerk with Hot Topic lick-and-stick tattoos all over him. And every single tattoo on him screamed “look how edgy I am”, like some kind of teen heartthrob gone wrong. He wasn’t The Joker, he was a romanticized version of what a teenage girl with a Joker/Harley fetish envisions as The Joker.
Also Margo Robbie as Harley Quinn was pretty awful.
As was Will Smith, because he just played Will Smith as usual, not Deadshot, the character that was supposed to be in the movie.
That entire movie was just pretty awful, to be honest.
Any Asian character played by a white actor
Hugo Weaving as Elrond in the LOTR movies. Elves are supposed to be pretty and kind, if a bit vain, and he’s just this scowling jerk.
YOU TAKE THAT BACK YOU IGNORANT COCKTURKEY!
Mac playing Nightman. Dennis should have had that role.
That’s better. Someone talking sense again.
