There needs to be a new term for ‘conspiracy theory’. The notion of keeping a keen eye trained on the world’s governments, intelligence agencies, and corporate and financial interests, in an effort to provide some level of illuminating accountability, needs a new name. Over the years, ‘conspiracy theory’ has been tainted by wild-eyed cranks expounding truly ludicrous things like Melania Trump having a clone, as well as—and far more damagingly—by a broad coalition of extreme right-wing ideologues and opportunists such as Alex Jones and his ilk going off about ‘PizzaGate’ and other examples of partisan hate speech designed not to illuminate anything but rather to foster an insidious mindset that can lead to lethal consequences in the real world.
So we need a new name for ‘conspiracy theory’. Because as the government’s own files show, there is an endless procession of things that happen out of sight, away from the prying eyes of the public; plans, Operations, and schemes that are kept classified for any number of reasons, that eventually get declassified, and that fit the bill for what that term denotes. I don’t know what this new name could be. Ponder that with me as we have a browse of two great AskReddit threads on disturbing declassified government files. You can check out the full threads here and here, but below are some highlights. Some are familiar, some less so. But before we start, there’s that great quote from history that seems apt here. How did that go again?
“‘A matter of national security,’ the age old cry of the oppressor.” - Captain Jean-Luc Picard
Here we go:
During the isolation period the dolphin, named Peter, began making sexual advances towards researcher, Margaret Howe Lovatt, who chose to relieve the animal’s urges because it was proving to be disruptive to the training.
Ignore the mention of Infowars in this next one. Putting that hate-filled cesspool aside, this is just a good list:
