Once, while in a relatively trendy, hipster-y part of East London, I needed a coffee. Spotting a cafe a few metres up ahead of me, I made a beeline for the entrance. Marching in, I passed a lot of the typically nonsensical pieces of art that places like those are always decorated with, and I walked directly up to a desk/counter/thing a few metres inside, behind which a bloke was sitting, drinking a coffee. I thought to myself, ‘Well, that looks promising. He’s consuming their own product.’ He looked up at me as I approached him. ‘Alright mate, could I just get an espresso please?’, I said, breezily. He looked at me, puzzled, and replied with a hesitant, ‘Excuse me?’ ‘Oh. Uh, an espresso please?’, I ventured, now also slightly puzzled. He paused, looked around, looked at me again, and finally piped up with, ‘Sure. I guess. But this is an art gallery. Not a cafe.’

Anyway, despite the fact that I was the one posing the dumb question, that was the first thing I thought of when I saw an AskReddit thread recently that asked the question: ‘Even though there are no dumb questions, what is the dumbest question you’ve ever been asked?’ You can check out the full thread here, but below are some highlights:
