In what feels like a huge violation and attack upon my very sense of self, I can now accurately say the sentence: In a few years, I’m going to be forty. I have no idea how that’s happened, and I’m sure there must be some mistake. Some accounting or rounding error made by the universe along the way. It’s got a lot on its mind, after all, the universe. There would be no shame in getting this tiny detail of one silly little human’s number of elapsed years. I certainly don’t feel like I’m shortly to hit forty. Sure the hair is rapidly losing the color it once had, but I still largely feel like a bumbling twenty-something (at most), improvising and bluffing his way through an ever-increasing number of forms and accounts. It’s a funny thing, getting older. There are moments when despite all that, you sometimes think to yourself: ‘Oh, maybe I am getting the hang of this.’ And then, out of nowhere, you’re humbled by a collision with some completely basic and simple thing that you just have no idea how to do. Reddit had this topic on its mind the other day when it asked the question: ‘What is something that 99% of people do wrong?’ You can check out the full list here, but below are some highlights:
