Have you ever seen something unfold before your very eyes that so perfectly encapsulates the duality of humanity? An event or events that exemplify everything it means to be alive in the 21st century, giving new meaning to our seemingly oppositional forces of agonizing earnestness and our nihilistic awareness of impending doom? My friends, look no further than this Friday, September 20th, 2019, for two displays of action that sum up why we are simultaneously wonderful and just awful.

Today, millions of people from around the world have risen up in unison to demand greater political action on our impending climate change crisis. Inspired by the work of activist Greta Thunberg, schoolkids from across the globe have gone on strike and led protests. Strikes are taking place in hundreds of locations, from America to Germany to Australia and beyond. It’s times like this you feel hope for our burning little rock in space, and, of course, the younger generation brought their A-game to their signs.

This comes after Thunberg, who sailed to America in part to give testimony before Congress, submitted the recent IPCC report on the impending catastrophe of global warming, as her testimony. She also totally destroyed this one Republican Congressman, and frankly, it’s always a delight to see how utterly terrified these grown men are of a teenage girl, who they know is right.

And then there is the other protest happening today. Oh, bless.

Remember when that Facebook page sprung up asking people to join together to storm Area 51, just to see if there’s anything in there? Remember what a fun meme that was? Well, they’re actually f*cking doing it?!

Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us is probably going to end as disappointingly as you imagine it will, but if someone out there is planning to write their thesis on the ways meme culture has come to irrevocably dominate our discourse, then this is your number one case study right here.

As you can see, it’s a decidedly less impressive turnout than the climate strikes — thank the powers that be for that — but still, they’re actually there?! Even the guy who created the Facebook page admitted it was intended to be a joke, but memes now rule us all and here we are as a species waiting for the Naruto runners to get out the hot alien babes.

So, either the planet is in safe hands for the next generation or we are f*cking doomed. Place your bets now.
