I’m not going to pretend that this is surprising. Trump has never hidden his racism. The man took out a full-page ad pushing for the execution of five young black men who had been forced into confessions for a crime they didn’t commit. Decades later he would lead the birtherism movement against President Barack Obama. One of his first campaign speeches saw him spew hateful, bigoted rhetoric against the Hispanic community. Within the last few weeks, he has floated racist, disproven gene theories!

However, if you look at some of the coverage around him, you may not know just how full-on racist he has gotten. It’s not just Fox News or Newmax that are downplaying Trump’s unhinged comments. The New York Times has made a habit of portraying Trump as obsessed with genes instead of factually stating that he is parroting racist conspiracy theories. It’s insane, and in a world that doesn’t read past headlines, it is dangerous.

Luckily, Trump can’t help himself when he has a mic in his face and a camera pointed at him. People can try to play out-of-context clips in an attempt to prove their point, as Brett Baier did yesterday, but the more Trump is forced to spit out his bulls*** on camera, the more it can be shoved in his face. He has every opportunity to play nice, as supporters lob him softballs like asking him to admit he lost in 2020, take some responsibility for January 6th, or walk back his false comments about Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio. However, the old racist can’t help himself.

Trump participated in a Town Hall for Univision last night. Jose Saralegui, an attendee who said he was a registered Republican, essentially gave Trump a chance to play nice. “During the campaign there has been some conspiracy theories in use … The authorities in Springfield, Ohio have more than one time clarified that the Haitians are not eating their cats and their dogs. Nonetheless, you want to revoke the permit they have to legally reside in this country. My question to you, respectfully, is: Do you really believe that these people are eating people’s pets?”

That’s a layup question! Trump could easily deny it. Say he read it somewhere but misspoke. The moderates would celebrate his change of tune. The New York Times would laud his savvy political shifting. Instead, the incoherent old man stayed on his nonsense. “This was just reported. I was just saying what has been reported, and eating other things too that they are not supposed to be. All I do is report. I was there, and I am going to be there, and we are going to take a look. And I will give you a full report when I do. That’s been in the newspapers and reported pretty broadly,” the attempted insurrectionist said.

You can see people in the audience shaking their heads and looking at him cockeyed. Jose spends most of the answer giving a, “c’mon, man,” look. Trump is never going to lose his base who love his racism and don’t give two s***s that he’s aiming to raise their taxes and take away their rights. It will be the moderates who cost Trump the election, and they can’t pretend he isn’t a racist monster when he’s admitting that to their faces every single day.
