There are a few interesting passages in the latest NYTimes piece on the search conducted by the FBI on Mar-a-Lago, and one of them is this one:

Some senior Republicans have been warned by allies of Mr. Trump not to continue to be aggressive in criticizing the Justice Department and the F.B.I. over the matter because it is possible that more damaging information about Mr. Trump related to the search will eventually become public.

It says something when Trump’s own people are telling Republicans to back off before they get burned. And what is it, exactly, that Trump allies fear?

The latest piece from the Times reveals that Trump had been subpoenaed to return classified documents in his possession and that the search was conducted because Trump had not yet done so. Someone from counterintelligence also visited Mar-a-Lago to inspect these documents before the FBI conducted its search. These documents “were so sensitive in nature, and related to national security, that the Justice Department had to act.”

Interestingly, the Times also reports that the FBI wanted to secure surveillance footage of the areas where the documents were located. They also subpoenaed employees of Trump to ask about how the documents were handled.

The Times doesn’t come right out and say it, but based on common-sense assumptions, it sounds like the FBI was concerned that Donald Trump was allowing others to look at these “documents sensitive in nature.” If Trump were allowing others who did not have clearance to look at these documents — and that sounds like everyone — and if there were surveillance footage of that, there could very well be a good reason that Trump allies are warning senior Republicans to back off of the FBI.
