I am squeamish when it comes to anti-Hillary commentary, and to be honest, I’m mostly squeamish about anti-Bernie commentary, too. It took me a few days to read that “disastrous” Bernie interview with the Daily News Editorial Board, although by the time I finally did, I had a hard time figuring out what the big deal was. Bernie knows what he’s talking about; I think sometimes he has a difficult time translating it in a way that people who don’t understand the banking industry can make sense of.
Ultimately, I think it’s probably natural to avoid hit pieces on our preferred candidates while seeking them out when it comes to Presidential candidates with whom we do not agree (hence, the online popularity of Donald Trump). We want to marshall evidence in favor of our candidates, and marshall evidence against those with whom we do not agree.
So I avoided pieces on Hillary’s racially-insensitive skit. It was enough for me to know that she’d been involved without really needing to know the context to think, “Goddamnit, Hillary. Don’t do stupid shit.”
Thanks to The Daily Show, I finally buckled down and forced myself to confront it, and my response to the actual sketch is, “Goddamnit, Hillary. Don’t do stupid shit.”
Trevor Noah helpfully explains why it was such a bad joke.
Racist? Maybe. Clueless and tone deaf? Absolutely.
