The Worst Things Donald Trump Said Over the Weekend

Over the weekend, I mostly disconnected from the political world, because it was getting to me. At some point between hearing that Donald Trump had called Marlee Matlin — who is deaf — a “retard” and that he called Khloe Kardashian the “ugly one,” I lost my ability to process this man’s words and actions. He is poison, and the political environment is so toxic right now that immersing oneself into it adds an extra layer of emotional baggage to one’s everyday life. When I snap at my kids, I’m like, “I’m sorry, sweetie. No, it’s not about the bomb of My Little Pony figures that has gone off in your room. It’s the Trump talking.”

I had to step away, spend some time with the family and stay off of political Twitter for a few days. But it still seeps in, and while I want so very badly to get to a place where we can mock and laugh at Donald Trump as a non-serious threat, we’re not there yet. Yeah, he’s losing, and his chances of winning the election are slim, but he’s released a black cloud into our democracy that may hang around for a long while.

I was going to rank the worst things Donald Trump said over the weekend, but it’s all so awful that to suggest that any one statement is worse than the other would do a disservice to those affected. So, here’s a quick rundown of all the horrible things he said or were revealed about him in the last three days:

— Multiple unnamed Celebrity Apprentice production staffers alleged that Trump called Marlee Matlin “retarded” and mimicked and disparaged her deafness.

— On Celebrity Apprentice, Donald Trump said “he basically wanted to just get rid of [Khloe Kardashian]. He called her a ‘piglet,’” an editor on the show reported, adding that Trump allegedly once asked: “What is this? We can’t even get the hot one?”

— During a rally, Trump suggested that Clinton needed to take a drug test before the next debate because, he alleged, she was using performance enhancing drugs, which is both unhinged and kind of a backhanded compliment, suggesting that Hillary performed so well at the last debate that drugs must be the reason.

— All weekend long, Trump continued questioning the electoral process, suggesting that the election was rigged. His supporters have bought into it, and some are threatening to overthrow the government if Trump loses. Both Paul Ryan and Trump’s running mate, Mike Pence, have broken with Trump over this issue, asserting that they have confidence in the election process.

— 41 percent of voters now believe that the election could be stolen from Trump.

— Trump is also calling upon his supporters to go to polling places in neighborhoods with a high percentage of voters who are people of color and watch them. Voters have answered the call, and they have suggested they will intimidate and threaten black or immigrant voters.

— Trump seems to have implied that he wasn’t impressed with Clinton’s body during the debate. “I’m standing at my podium and she walks in front of me, right? She walks in front of me, you know, and when she walked in front of me, believe me, I wasn’t impressed.”

— Trump continued to assert that he didn’t assault the 12 women who have alleged Trump harassed them, arguing that they were too unattractive for him to grope.

— Trump is now asserting that SNL is part of the media’s coordinated effort to rig the election.

— He blamed “Hillary Clinton and the animals who represent her” for the firebombing of a North Carolina GOP office.

Despite all of this (and more, I’m sure), it is also worth noting that Trump is still only behind 4-6 points in national polls, reinforcing the importance of voting and ensuring that your friends and family also vote.
