Last night’s GOP debate was, as they say, a shitshow. If you didn’t know better, you may not have realized that the government is on the brink of shutting down this Sunday because it was barely mentioned during the debate. Frankly, if the GOP debate was all you had to go on, you might not assume that someone who wasn’t even in the room was 40 points ahead of his next competitor, which at this point is either Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, or Ron DeSantis, depending on the poll. Not that it matters who is number two. However, it was nearly impossible to break through all the noise. Literally.
holy hell this is a disaster — even worse than I possibly imagined pic.twitter.com/H0Fm6IvBwj

Here are some quick takeaways, primarily from Aaron Rupar’s video embeds. There were two memorably terrible takes last night during the debate, the first from Tim Scott, who — yes — somehow alleged that life during the Lyndon Johnson administration was harder than … slavery. “We survived slavery … but what was hard to survive was Johnson’s Great Society … where they decided to take the Black father out of the household to get a check in the mail.”

The other came from Chris Christie, and it wasn’t his terrible new nickname for Trump, Donald Duck, which elicited a full-body cringe. No, it was when Chris Christie attacked Joe Biden for … being married to a teacher.

I didn’t know who Doug Burgum was. I still don’t know who Doug Burgum is. This guy is running for President? No wonder Trump is winning.

Vivek Ramaswamy is just awful, and what is with the hair? He looks like he’s auditioning for Caesar Flickerman in the Asylum knock-off of The Hunger Games.

Nikki Haley is a uniquely awful candidate, but I will give her this: She had the night’s best line. Easily.

Ron DeSantis was … there!
What’s wrong with Ron DeSantis? We all saw it during the first debate. And now, throughout the second Republican debate, Ron DeSantis kept making bizarre facial expressions. It may seem subtle to many. But make no mistake, this is very disturbing behavior. pic.twitter.com/xFqreBPnPR

Easily the best performance last night was that of Gavin Newsom in the spin-room after the debate, who spoke on all the cable outlets and even did an excellent job of squaring off against Sean Hannity on Fox News. What happens to Fox News viewers when they hear scraps of truth?

He was very good.
