As we predicted this morning, the Democrats have come to an agreement to re-open the government today. It’s a continuing resolution that is expected to pass, which will keep the government open until February 8th, extend CHIP for six years, and give Congress another couple of weeks to work out a bi-partisan agreement to keep DREAMers where they belong: In the United States. Mitch McConnell and the Republicans have given Chuck Schumer and the Democrats assurances that a DACA bill will go to the floor and receive an up or down vote.

In other words, the Democrats caved. Why? This tweet pretty much explains it:

The Democrats don’t fear their base because they know that when it comes down to it, we have no f**cking choice but to vote for the Democrats because the alternative is too appalling. They’re not wrong, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is bullshit. In what world can Mitch McConnell — who sold out a member of his own party, Susan Collins, to get the tax bill passed — be trusted? His “assurances” mean absolutely nothing, and if he goes back on those “assurances,” he will not be held accountable. He’ll be celebrated by the GOP base.

In other words, Schumer: You are no closer now to a DACA bill today than you were yesterday. I’m glad that CHIP has finally been extended and that Republicans can no longer hold children’s healthcare hostage, but Schumer just rolled the hell over as the Democrats too often seem to do. They just can’t handle a little heat, even knowing that we’ve got their back, because they’re too goddamn afraid of the GOP.

Disappointing.
