TFG Not Only Pilfered Classified Docs, He Tried to Hide Them from the FBI

While TFG (the former guy) continues to have daily meltdowns on his failing social media network, Attorney General Merrick Garland continues to quietly do the work. He isn’t warring with TFG on Twitter. He doesn’t make a lot of public statements, but he is using legal filings to make an increasingly dangerous criminal case against TFG.

The latest revelation comes in the DOJ’s response to TFG’s motion for a special master. The motion not only argues that the judge has no jurisdiction, but that a special master isn’t necessary because the DOJ has already done the work requested of TFG’s legal team, namely setting aside documents that may contain attorney-client privilege.

But there are also new details about the investigation contained within the motion. We now know that the search of Mar-a-Lago, for instance, yielded three classified documents in TFG’s desk, and over another 100 classified docs on his property (see image above, provided by the DOJ). The FBI found twice the number of classified and top secret documents during the search of Mar-a-Lago than had been handed over by TFG and his attorneys, who swore an oath that they had already turned everything over.

Back in January, after many requests, TFG turned over several boxes of classified documents. The DOJ asked for the rest of them, and after stonewalling them, TFG complied with a subpoena and provided additional classified and top secret documents. However, during a visit to Mar-a-Lago on June 3rd, TFG’s lawyer prohibited the FBI from searching his storage room for more classified docs, while also saying that all of the docs had already been turned over.

That was not true. The government received information from various civilian sources that TFG had more documents, and that some had been moved and/or hidden from the FBI. That prompted the search of Mar-a-Lago, where they found more documents that were so restrictive that “even the FBI counterintelligence personnel and DOJ attorneys conducting the review required additional clearances before they were permitted to review certain documents.” From the NYTimes, quoting the DOJ’s filing:

The filing noted that “the F.B.I., in a matter of hours, recovered twice as many documents with classification markings as the ‘diligent search’ that the former president’s counsel and other representatives had weeks to perform,” a fact that it said “calls into serious question the representations made in the June 3 certification and casts doubt on the extent of cooperation in this matter.”

In other words, TFG’s refusal to cooperate and hand over documents — and his attorneys’ refusal to allow the FBI to go through materials in his storage room — is what ultimately prompted the Mar-a-Lago search, which obviously turned up numerous other documents that TFG had tried to conceal from the FBI. So now they not only have him on the Espionage Act charges but on obstruction, as well.
