Ted Cruz Gets A True Taste Of 'New York Values'

Remember when presidential hopeful/Lemongrab double Ted Cruz tried to slam rival Donald Trump with the phrase “New York values”? Yeah, well, that predictably came back to bite Cruz on the ass when he came to campaign in the state, trying to score some of its 95 delegates come next week’s primary.

Cruz tried to draw crowds in the Bronx for a campaign event featuring state senator/minister Ruben Diaz Sr, who infamously spoke out against gay marriage ahead of its legalization in New York. The New York Post points out that though “more than 1.4 million people (live) in the Bronx,” Cruz couldn’t even get 100 to come and support his bid for president. And about 70 of those who did attend were Diaz minions. Two more were protesters who got chucked for calling Cruz “anti-immigrant.”

Ahead of this embarrassing event, Diaz’s Democrat son Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. teamed with the Hillary Clinton campaign for a press conference where he declared:

“Ted Cruz is a hypocrite. He not only offended New Yorkers, he offended Bronxites, and now he’s here today in New York and in the Bronx looking for money and votes. We in the Bronx know how offensive he’s been. We know the truth about our borough.”

And the borough wasn’t having it.

Cruz was planning to appear at a Bronx high school to gain support and back pedal on his comments about New York values. But the students of Bronx Lighthouse College Preparatory Academy threatened a walk out if the Texas senator came on campus. In a letter to their principal, the students (rightly) described Cruz as “misogynistic, homophobic, and racist.” 16-year-old Destiny Domeneck told The New York Daily News, “Most of us are immigrants or come from immigrant backgrounds. Ted Cruz goes against everything our school stands for.”

You can read the full letter here.

And of course, NYDN had the perfect salt to throw in Cruz’s wound:
