Rudy Giuliani Got The Birthday Wishes He Deserves
At his best, Rudy Guiliani was “America’s Mayor,” who saw New York City through the harrowing events of 9/11, and inspired a sense of community and hope when our neighbors were slain, our skyline was defiled, and our sense of safety shattered. At his worst, he is a vile, big-mouthed defender of the Trump White House. And the city that once adored him has now made it clear we’ve had enough. This Memorial Day, former New York City mayor Rudy Guiliani was booed at a Yankees Game on his birthday. If this were a scripted TV show, we’d decry this bit as too on the nose (even as we cheered it for being just desserts). But in the darkest timeline, it’s just another day that ends in “y.”
When the announcer took a moment to wish the newly minted 74-year-old a happy birthday, instead of applause or cheers, Guiliani’s name was met with stadium-rattling jeers. By the end of the day, video of this public shaming would be splashed across the web on major news sites. But before that, Guliani got dragged on Twitter:
At Yankee stadium: “The Yankees wish a happy birthday to former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.”— Adrian Carrasquillo (@Carrasquillo) May 28, 2018
Thunderous boos rained across the stadium.

Big fall from grace. He used to be America's Mayor. https://t.co/nJYwKYwYP4— Soledad O'Brien (@soledadobrien) May 28, 2018
Anyone who lived in NYC on 9/11 knows how inconceivable this is. You have to be off-the-charts vile to squander that kind of goodwill. https://t.co/2QicVnRb4V— Jason Cochran (@JasCochran) May 28, 2018
Rudy Giuliani getting booed at Yankee stadium on his birthday is more inspiring than the movie “Rudy.”— Michael Blackman (@mikerblackman) May 29, 2018
"Smithers, Are they booing me?" "No sir they're saying "Boo-liani" https://t.co/7ExhYyQ64t— PremRock (@PlanetPremRock) May 28, 2018
It's not right that Giuliani got booed at a Yankees game on his birthday, only because everyone didn't get up and also give him the finger as well.— (((Mark Campbell))) (@MrWordsWorth) May 29, 2018
Stormy Daniels’ lawyer, Michael Avenatti, subtweeted Trump in his Giuliani tweet.
And here’s my favorite reaction from conservative Twitter:
Milo Yiannopoulos jeered out of a bar, Rudy giuliani booed on his birthday at Yankee Stadium, and Tomi Lahren splashed with water in a restaurant. Stay classy, liberals.— Jamie Jeffords (@JamieJeffords) May 29, 2018
These fuckers are coming for the rights and safety of marginalized groups. Pardon me if I don’t lose sleep over the public being rude to them. And if you’re tempted to feel bad for Guliani, remember that before he was America’s Mayor, he was a petty asshole with a worrisome “weirdness factor.”
