Rich, Old White Men Continue to Ruin Everything

Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks and a lifelong Democrat is considering pulling a Lieber next year and running for President as an independent, a move that will either fail spectacularly … or give the election to Donald Trump, which is to say: Fail spectacularly in a different kind of way. The billionaire doesn’t want to run as a Democrat even though he is a lifelong Democrat because he knows he can’t win on account of the party’s rejection of old, rich white men.

More to the point, Schultz is afraid that some lefty will come in with ideas about universal health care and free college tuition, and Schultz believes that’s just as bad as Trump’s “wall,” nevermind the fact that Trump is never going to get his wall … and Democrats are probably never going to get universal health care and free college tuition, but steering the country in that direction is better than the alternative. Democrats, however, fear that if Schultz runs as an independent, he’ll peel votes away from the party and allow Trump to win with his 35 percent of the vote.

They might not be wrong, either. I am not actually opposed to a legitimate third-party run and a European style electoral system with more than two parties, just not now when Democracy is crumbling and Schultz could help to hasten it. Besides, if there must be an independent candidacy, Schultz should take his billions and put it behind a moderate candidate who actually has a shot in hell of winning the election, rather than in himself — a billionaire businessman — whose best-case scenario is playing spoiler.

— Elsewhere, rich old white man — and venerable journalist — Tom Brokaw stuck his damn foot in his mouth during Meet the Press yesterday, when discussing why they want a wall in places like Wyoming.

“A lot of this, we don’t want to talk about. But the fact is, on the Republican side, a lot of people see the rise of an extraordinary, important new constituent in American politics, Hispanics, who will come here and all be Democrats.”

Brokaw then appeared to cite the fear of racial mixing and a majority-minority nation expressed by some Americans.

“Also, I hear, when I push people a little harder, ‘Well, I don’t know whether I want brown grandbabies,’” he said. “I mean, that’s also a part of it. It’s the intermarriage that is going on and the cultures that are conflicting with each other.”

Tom. Dude. But then he goes in with the kicker: Assimilation. And these comments he did not attribute to Republicans in Wyoming and Idaho. This was his own commentary.

“I also happen to believe that the Hispanics should work harder at assimilation,” he said. “That’s one of the things I’ve been saying for a long time. You know, they ought not to be just codified in their communities but make sure that all their kids are learning to speak English, and that they feel comfortable in the communities. And that’s going to take outreach on both sides, frankly.”

Ack! He didn’t help matters in his efforts to apologize on Twitter.

What are you doing, Tom?! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

— Finally, I leave you with this, re: the Rich, Old White Man in Charge. From Molly O’Toole at the L.A. Times:

“Today the United States of America gets back control of its borders,” Trump said on Jan. 25, 2017, signing executive orders to hire 15,000 new border and immigration officers.

Two years after President Trump signed orders to hire 15,000 new border agents and immigration officers, the administration has spent tens of millions of dollars in the effort — but has thousands more vacancies than when it began.

In a sign of the difficulties, Customs and Border Protection allocated $60.7 million to Accenture Federal Services, a management consulting firm, as part of a $297-million contract to recruit, vet and hire 7,500 border officers over five years, but the company has produced only 33 new hires so far.

33! Heckuva job, Brownie!
