President Trump, Facing Potential Prison Time, 'Jokes' That He May Extend His Presidential Term

We’ve been spending so much time on the Democratic nominees for President that we may have neglected to remind you every single day that Donald Trump is still a pile of sentient bones and garbage. So, let’s just check in on the President.

Over the weekend, Trump retweeted a tweet from Jerry Falwell Jr. that stated, “Trump should have 2 yrs added to his 1st term as pay back for time stolen by this corrupt failed coup.” But hey, y’all! It’s just a joke. He was kidding! Just like it was a joke when he said he’d start sending all the immigrants to sanctuary cities. Or like the time he joked that he was going to separate children from their parents at the border. The thing with Trump is, they always start out as a “joke” until it gets fed into the system, becomes normalized, and takes on a life of its own after his followers embolden him to co-opt a joke into reality.

You know, when Putin became President in Russia in 2000, the Presidential terms were only 4 years long and no one could serve more than two consecutive terms. Since then, thanks to some creative accounting, so to speak, Putin has maintained the power of that Presidency for 18 years and counting, terms are now six years long, and when 2024 arrives, you can bet your ass that Putin will find a way to maintain his Presidency. For him, the alternative is death by political enemy. For real: If Putin doesn’t die in office, he will probably be killed by his political enemies once he’s lost the power of the Presidency. For Trump, it’s likely a lot of indictments and probably prison time, so Nancy Pelosi’s current fear that Trump might not accept the results of the 2020 election is well founded.

As a professor at American University said, “Remember Trump cannot be embarrassed — cannot be shamed. You can’t appeal to morality, because he has none. You can’t appeal to compassion, he has none. You can’t appeal to the law, he doesn’t care. And if he thinks he can get away with it — absolutely, he will do anything.”

It all sounds like a wild conspiracy theory until it doesn’t. Trump does not care about the law. To wit: As expected, Steven Mnuchin refused to turn Trump’s tax returns over to Congress by yesterday’s deadline. It’ll probably go to the Supreme Court, which should rule in favor of Congress because the law is clear on this. However, those strict constructionists on the Court may decide to apply “the spirit” of the law to this one, which would allow five justices to come up with their own interpretation of “the spirit of the law.”

In either case, it may be a sign of what’s to come: Trump loses the election, but then challenges it, kicks it to the courts, and sticks around for as long as he can. When/if the Supreme Court goes against him, Trump attacks the third branch of government as partisan judges on a witch hunt against Trump, while Republicans sort of shrug their shoulders and say, “It was only a joke.”
