President Obama Responds to Donald Trump's Wiretapping Accusations the Way We All Should

One of the things that annoys me the most about this “wiretapping scandal,” is how the media plays along with it in an attempt to treat it like any other story. Yesterday, during Sean Spicer’s press conference, the media kept asking the same question in different ways, basically trying to get Spicer to admit that Trump lied about the wiretapping accusation. “Let me get this straight,” a reporter would say. “Trump has information that Obama tapped his phones, but he wants a Congressional investigation? Why doesn’t he just provide the evidence he has?”

The media knows he has no evidence, but they just really, really want Spicer to admit that. Spicer won’t, so the media continues to phrase the same question in different ways. They’re playing a role in a ridiculous charade, instead of just saying, “Dude. The President lied. We know he lied. Don’t make this worse by continuing to lie on his behalf. If he’s not lying, then provide us with the evidence that he’s not, because otherwise, we’re going to continue believing and reporting that Trump lied.”

Really, the only legit response to any of this is an eye roll. We can pretend to be outraged. We can pretend to investigate something that doesn’t exist, and we can pretend to take the President’s words at face value, but not a damn one of us actually believes what Trump is saying. The story is not: “Donald Trump Accuses Obama of Tapping his Phone.” The story is: “A Paranoid, Unpopular Donald Trump Continues to Fall for Baseless Conspiracy Theories.”

A few publications have reported that President Obama was “livid” about the tweets, but that doesn’t really sound like Obama. This report from NBC News, on the other hand, sounds exactly how Barry would respond:

He rolled his eyes. That’s the correct response because there’s no point in taking Trump’s allegations seriously, because he is not a serious man. Better still, it’s the exact sort of reaction that will get under Trump’s skin the most, because he just accused his predecessor of a felony, and Obama is like, “¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I told you that bitch was crazy.”
