When Keeping It Jesus Goes Wrong: Stephanie Borowicz Edition

“So that even if the Mufti of Constantinople were to send a missionary to preach Mohammedanism to us, he would find a pulpit at his service.”Benjamin Franklin

In these absolutely buttholed and stupid times, Republicans love to describe liberals as “snowflakes” for doing this weird thing where we protect diverse, often persecuted groups and generally try our best not to be racist dicks. Why can’t we be strong, strapping Americans who completely lose their shit whenever we see a brown person? Like, for example, State Representative Stephanie Borowicz, who was so triggered by the presence of Pennsylvania’s first Muslim member of the House that she literally tried to conjure supernatural forces to protect herself.

No, really. From the Washington Post:

State Rep. Stephanie Borowicz was on the ninth “Jesus” of her opening prayer in the Pennsylvania statehouse when other lawmakers started to look uncomfortable.

Speaker Mike Turzai, a fellow Republican, glanced up — but Borowicz carried on, delivering a 100-second ceremonial invocation that some of her colleagues decried as an offensive, divisive and Islamophobic display shortly before the legislature swore in its first Muslim woman.

“God forgive us — Jesus — we’ve lost sight of you, we’ve forgotten you, God, in our country, and we’re asking you to forgive us,” Borowicz said, followed by a quote from the Bible’s second book of Chronicles that implores God’s followers to “turn from their wicked ways.” Then she praised President Trump for his unequivocal support of Israel.

Normally, this is the part where I’d rag on my home state of Pennsyltucky and highlight the fact that Borowicz comes from one of the many extremely “God and Guns” areas. However, much to my surprise, Borowicz managed to piss off people on both sides of the aisle. For Chrissakes, the dude standing next to her tried to sue the state into banning “nontheists” from performing opening sessions — it didn’t work — and even that guy almost dove in front of the mic.

For those of you wondering how the hell the establishment clause allows an opening prayer in the first place, it’s actually legit as long as all faiths are welcome to participate and everyone steers clear of proselytizing and/or straight-up hurling your religion at another person like a goddamn Harry Potter spell, Stephanie. Case in point, and again to my surprise, an invocation from the Quran was given the very next day and welcomed with applause, according to CBS News.

As for Borowicz, I’m not going to mince words here. She knew exactly what she was doing. I’ve witnessed batshit displays exactly like this my whole life, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what was going on. Her own party picked up on it, and half of those people think common core is turning their kids gay. But the prayer wasn’t the worst part of Borowicz’s little stunt.

That would be the gaslighting.

Wow. Just so we’re clear, Stephanie Borowicz not only chickened out of owning the shit she tried to pull, but in the same breath, she shaded people who apologize for offending thy neighbor. Excuse me while I speak in tongues for a moment: F*ck you, lady.

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”Matthew 6:5-8
