Paul Ryan's Wisconsin Challenger Just Released His First Ad, and It is Paul Ryan Kryptonite

In 2016, Paul Ryan defeated his Democratic opponent by 35 points. Frankly, Ryan — who has held his Congressional seat since 1999 — seems like a lock every two years. He’s Speaker of the House. He’s a former Vice Presidential Candidate. He’s unbeatable, right?

Maybe. Maybe not.

Paul Ryan spearheaded the historically unpopular Obamacare repeal in the House last month. He continues to defend a historically unpopular President. He’s shamelessly, transparently putting lives at risk so that he can push a tax cut through for rich people. Polls suggested earlier this month that 48 percent of voters in Ryan’s district think it’s time to try someone new, compared to 46 percent who want to re-elect Paul Ryan, and that was before he had a formidable challenger.

Enter Randy Bryce. Randy Bryce is the perfect guy to run against Paul Ryan on paper, because he’s the opposite of everything Paul Ryan stands for. He’s a Bernie guy, an Army veteran, a single parent, and a cancer survivor. He’s also blue-collar as hell in a blue-collar Wisconsin district.

Bryce just released his first campaign ad, and my first thought was: Holy Shit, what if you combined Trump’s populism with Obama’s hopefulness and what if he actually embodied the very people that Donald Trump says that he represents? I mean, jesus: This ad is like Paul Ryan kryptonite.

Undoubtedly, the GOP machine will probably dig up some dirt on this guy. I’m sure they’ll drag out every bone in his closet, but in a state that elected a corrupt, pussy-grabbing narcissistic megalomaniac, how bad could it be? I mean: I don’t know much about Randy Bryce, but based on the story he’s putting forth and Paul Ryan’s growing unpopularity, it certainly seems like Bryce could make a run in a district where the last Democrat lost by 35.
