“He’s not gonna be that bad,” a friend and former teacher told me before NYC’s 2021 mayoral election. To be fair to my old friend, Democratic mayoral candidate Eric Adams was running against racist Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. Compared to Sliwa, Adams wasn’t that bad. He ran on progressive causes, had done a lot of positive work as Brooklyn’s Borough president, and seemed committed to the ideals and policies of most of his fellow progressive candidates. That was incorrect.
Stacked up against Sliwa, Adams looked great. Compared to his fellow Democrats, Adams stuck out like a sore thumb. The man ran his campaign with brash arrogance. His unwavering support of the NYPD, of which he was a member for 22 years, was his most troubling characteristic (at the time). He ran a campaign based on fear instead of progression. Adams was a cop, running for cops, and (slightly) pretending to be a progressive. Once he made his way into office, the pretending melted away.
Adams has made an enemy of social programs while serving in NYC’s highest office. He threatened to cut millions of dollars from schools and libraries. He held them hostage, only relenting after immense pressure from NYC citizens and council members. He cut hundreds of millions of dollars from early education programs like universal 3-K, limiting available seats. Meanwhile, Adams has proposed spending over $200 million on a new Queens training facility for the NYPD.
But wait! He sucks more! Adams has been a huge proponent of getting workers back into offices in NYC, even when conditions were still dangerous thanks to COVID and residents were more concerned with skyrocketing rents. When people (rightfully) pushed back on that, Adams suggested converting office space into apartments even though that would create apartments with no windows (which is both a fire hazard and f***ing crazy). Speaking of crazy, Adams claimed that God told him to be mayor!
I’m not done!!! Adams has demonized migrants who have come to NYC for food, shelter, and a better way of life. You know, the thing that NYC is f***ing known for. New York is the greatest city in the world thanks to its global population. At a time when it could embrace its rich and welcoming history, Adams chose instead to bungle the acceptance programs put in place to help incoming people. He then went to Washington D.C. to complain about these pesky, needy, helpless people to President Biden.
However, Adams’ trip to D.C. was cut short. Why? Corruption! Almost a year ago, the home of Brianna Suggs was raided. Suggs was Adams’ chief fundraiser. Adams quickly returned to NYC, saying that he and his offices would cooperate with authorities and that Adams himself had yet to be charged with anything. That has been a recurring mantra for Adams. As numerous people in his orbit have been raided, indicted, or resigned, Adams has maintained his lack of wrongdoing. That’s going to be a lot harder now!
Yesterday, NYC Mayor Eric Adams was indicted on criminal charges in a federal court. I’m going to let that sentence rest for a moment, as I’ve been waiting to type it for almost four years.
The indictment against Adams is still sealed (for now). CNBC reports the indictment includes charges related to conspiracy to commit bribery, bribery, wire fraud, and contributions by a foreign national. The Adams administration has been linked to a Turkish businessman, and their relationship has gone back as far as 2015. Allegedly, Adams traveled to Turkey to receive illegal contributions to his campaign.
This is a huge deal. Leading up to the indictment, people have been fleeing Adams’ administration. He lost his police commissioner, top lawyer, school chancellor, and health commissioner. It feels like they knew what was coming. So did NY Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Yesterday, before the news about Adams broke, AOC openly called for his resignation. This was after the New York Times reported prosecutors were investigating Adams’s ties to Israel, China, Qatar, South Korea, and Uzbekistan as well.
Never short of bravado, Adams has claimed he will fight the charges. He has hired celebrity lawyer Alex Spiro to defend him. The mayor released an absurd and melodramatic statement essentially blaming the Biden administration, saying, “It is now my belief that the federal government intends to charge me with crimes,” Adams explained in a video. “If so, these charges would be entirely false, based on lies. But they would not be surprising. I always knew that If I stood my ground for all of you that I would be a target — and a target I became. If I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight this with every ounce of my strength and spirit.”
It looks like “I have not been charged” won’t work anymore! It feels really strange to celebrate cops, but when a bunch of cops take down a corrupt cop, I have to at least give a solemn golf clap. Adams is cooked. While he may not face any real punishment, this will hopefully, at least, ensure that he becomes a one-term mayor. After that, he will likely become a Conservative firebrand (he already has been that, but at least he can be open about it now). He’ll become a correspondent on FOX or CNN, lamenting the “far-left” or some such bulls***. But we’ll all know the truth. He’s a failure. A failure as a mayor. A failure as a man. A failure as a human being.
But, hey, he was better than Curtis Sliwa, right?
