What else does the DOJ need to arrest TFG? The latest is that the FBI found a document at Mar-a-Lago, during the search in August, that contained a “foreign government’s nuclear capabilities.” That’s just one of the top secret classified documents found there (in addition to numerous folders labeled as top secret that were empty). Some of the records that were seized were not documents that should have been kept in an unsecured location in a private club where members could come and go as they pleased. From the Post:

Some of the seized documents detail top-secret U.S. operations so closely guarded that many senior national security officials are kept in the dark about them. Only the president, some members of his Cabinet or a near-Cabinet-level official could authorize other government officials to know details of these special-access programs, according to people familiar with the search, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive details of an ongoing investigation.

Documents about such highly classified operations require special clearances on a need-to-know basis, not just top-secret clearance. Some special-access programs can have as few as a couple dozen government personnel authorized to know of an operation’s existence. Records that deal with such programs are kept under lock and key, almost always in a secure compartmented information facility, with a designated control officer to keep careful tabs on their location.

Meanwhile, TFG’s lawyer is mostly yelling about leaks and not addressing the substance of the documents. TFG did say in mid-August, however, that “Nuclear weapons issue is a Hoax” and accused the FBI of planting documents. In late August, he suggested that any revelations that there might be documents containing nuclear secrets is “public relations subterfuge.”

In other words, he knew.

I’m not trying to fan flames or spread misinformation, but it should be noted that Joy Reid over on MSNBC speculated — and Fox News reported — that the seized documents could have links to an increased number of informants being killed in 2021.

“While all of this is happening, we know that in 2021 that there was a rash of deaths of American spies. They were being caught. They were being killed. This is a very real and exigent circumstance. The CIA has admitted to that. Now, we are not saying that we know there is some connection between the purloined documents and those events. But they did happen at a time when Trump did have custody of some really sensitive information that he should not have had.”

It’s true that a “troubling number of spies” have been captured or killed, but reporting in the NYTimes attributes that to the increasing prowess of foreign intelligence services in places like Russia and China, as well as American spies that aren’t as competent as they once were. The report also says that the increased number of compromised informants occurred over several years, and not just while TFG held classified documents in Mar-a-Lago.

I suspect that Fox News published Reid’s speculation thinking that it would be dismissed as a fringe conspiracy theory, but also, Fox News viewers are highly susceptible to fringe conspiracy theories.
