Morning Briefing: How Prince Harry Is Gonna Super Piss Off Donald Trump

Good morning, and Happy Boxing Day! After Trump won the election, I vowed to focus as much as possible on political news that was good for Democrats and bad for Trump, in an effort to keep us mostly sane.

Here’s one of my favorite stories in that vein: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle — who have grown close to Barack and Michelle Obama — want to invite the Obamas to their wedding in May. However, the government is pleading with the couple not to invite them, because it will infuriate Donald Trump at a time when the relationship between America and England has never been worse (I mean, aside from that whole Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, and those times when England had to wait around for our asses to join the World Wars and offer assistance).

From The Sun:

The property billionaire does not hide his loathing of Mr Obama and is expected to be enraged if his predecessor gets the coveted call up when he won’t.

Meghan made disparaging comments about him on social media during his election campaign last year.

There are deep fears among senior Foreign Office and No10 officials that another perceived national snub will make it impossible for Theresa May to meaningfully engage with Trump.

A senior government source said: “Harry has made it clear he wants the Obamas at the wedding, so it’s causing a lot of nervousness.

“Trump could react very badly if the Obamas get to a Royal wedding before he has had a chance to meet the Queen.

I cannot wait for the furious tweets, y’all!

+ In other news, a man protesting the GOP tax plan delivered horse manure wrapped as a Christmas present to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s Bel Air home. The card attached stated, “Misters Mnuchin & Trump, We’re returning the ‘gift’ of the Christmas tax bill. Warmest wishes, The American people.” Robert Strong, a psychologist for the Los Angeles County Public Health Department, has taken credit for the gift. He’s probably gonna get in legal trouble what with the LAPD bomb squad being called in, but you know what? Worth it.

+ More good news: Though Trump keeps tweeting that gutting the individual mandate has effectively killed Obamacare, signups this year were nearly as high as last year (despite zero promotion from the White House), and most of those new signups were in Trump states.

+ I’m gonna screenshot this tweet because I have to imagine it’s going to be deleted soon.

I don’t think that Orrin Hatch read the article naming him Utahn of the year. Here’s why he received the “honor,” according to the piece:

It has everything to do with recognizing:

Hatch’s part in the dramatic dismantling of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments.

His role as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee in passing a major overhaul of the nation’s tax code.

His utter lack of integrity that rises from his unquenchable thirst for power.

Then later: “It would be good for Utah if Hatch, having finally caught the Great White Whale of tax reform, were to call it a career. If he doesn’t, the voters should end it for him.”

Dumbass.
